Technology has become an important part of modern education. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools are technological resources that teachers and pupils use to support teaching, learning, communication, and the sharing of information.
Looking back on my experience as a teacher, ICT tools have played an important role in supporting my lessons and helping pupils learn. The main tools I have used are computers, projectors, printers, television, educational videos, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint presentations.
One of the tools I use most frequently is Microsoft Word. It helps me to prepare worksheets, tests, lesson plans and other teaching materials fast and neatly. Using a computer has also made it easier to store documents, make changes when needed and access educational resources such as curriculum guides from the Ministry of Education Website, as well as educational videos and printable worksheets from other online sources.
Educational videos have also been effective in the classroom in all subject areas. They help to make lessons more interesting, engaging and easier for pupils to understand. In Science, videos can demonstrate experiments, life cycles, and natural processes that may be difficult to observe directly. In Social Studies, they can show geographical features from different parts of the world, cultural practices and historical events. For Mathematics, videos can provide step-by-step demonstrations of problem-solving strategies and concepts. In Literacy and Language Arts, they can support reading comprehension, vocabulary development, letter-sound recognition, correct pronunciation of words and storytelling activities. These are very useful when teaching Phonics, as pupils can listen to and practice the correct pronunciation of letters, blends and words. The television is particularly useful for displaying these videos to the class with the use apps such as YouTube, allowing pupils to view the content clearly. Many pupils understand topics more easily when they can both see and hear the information being explained.
From my experience, these ICT tools have improved both teaching and learning. They help me present lessons in a clear and organized way while making learning more entertaining for pupils. They also support different learning styles, as some pupils learn better through visuals and demonstrations than through text alone. However, there are some problems at times such as electricity outages or technical difficulties with equipment, the benefits of using ICT tools in the classroom are much greater than these problems.
To sum up, my experience using ICT tools as a teacher has been very beneficial in supporting my daily classroom activities. These tools have allowed me to present lessons in a more engaging way, strengthen my teaching methods, and better support pupils in their learning. They also help pupils to grasp concepts more easily and participate more actively in lessons. I believe that ICT will continue to be an important part of teaching and learning, as technology keeps developing and improving education.
